Is it comfy on the road inside a slide-out RV?

The reason I ask is because every picture I see...every RV show I visit...slide-out units have all of their "slides" extended--thus showing a lot of room and lots of comfort.
But what about on the road?
When the slides are tucked-in, is it too cramped for passengers?
I've often wondered about this.
I mean, you see slide-outs with sofas & dinettes in place. But when they're tucked in, is everything smashed together inside the gallery/lounge area?
